TFD Remembers the Heros of 9/11

It’s hard to believe that it has already

been eight years since that catastro-

phic day. Even though it has been so

long, the lives lost have definitely not

been forgotten, especially by those of

us in the Fire Service. The events of

that day changed the face of our

country forever, and we must never

forget any of the victims of that

tragedy. It is hard to imagine the

courage it must have taken for the

brave men and women of the FDNY

and NYPD to go into the towers. The

amount of lives lost that day would have been substantially higher if not for the efforts of the rescuers. 343 FDNY brothers were lost that day, and they will never be forgotten.

Welcome to the troy fire & Rescue website

The Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;

Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late

Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;

Please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

Second Alarm Fire in Troy

At around 5pm Troy Fire was dispatched on a First Alarm to 18 Mill Street, for smoke in a building. Upon arrival, Deputy Hebert established command, and informed dispatch that there was a working fire, and requested a second alarm. Mutual Aid companies from Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Keene, Meadowood, and Swanzey were dispatched to the scene.

An interior attack was made by Cpt. Todd Carter,     FF. Brett Murray, and FF. Nicholas Jacobetz. Heavy smoke conditions and older building construction were encountered, and the interior team ended extinguishing an oven fire, with some previous extension.

All of the building occupants were evacuated safely, and no one was injured. We were informed that the occupant owned a cat, which we found safely hiding beneath the bed. A job well done by all of the Troy firefighters and the assisting mutual aid companies.

Structure Fire in Fitzwilliam

At 0129 HRs, Troy Fire was dispatched to 5 Royalston Rd in Fitzwilliam on a 1st Alarm Assignment. Reports from the scene indicated a fully involved structure fire. 34 Engine 2 and 34 Tanker 1 Responded. Upon arrival Dep. Chief Meader, and FF’s Murray and Huntoon went straight to the fire ground, and began an exterior attack along with members of Fitzwilliam FD. Chief Huntoon and Dep. Chief Hebert laid a 5” line approximately 1100 ft to a small quarry pond to supply water. Captain Carter and FF Lyman assisted setting up main water supply at the scene.

The fire took around 2.5 hours to get under control, due to only being able to utilize an exterior attack. Eight Fire Departments responded, with around 50 firefighters. The resident of the building awoke to choking on smoke, and made egress by jumping out of a second story window. Fortunately, the resident received only minor injuries, and refused transport to the hospital.

An excellent job was done by all of the responding companies. A friendly reminder from the Troy Fire Dept, make sure that you  install ample smoke detectors in your home, they save lives!

Tree Harvester Fully Involved

At 1221Hrs Troy Fire was dispatched Mutual Aid to Fitzwilliam for a tree harvester fire in the woods. Chief   Huntoon and FF Murray responded in 34B1 with 9 fire extinguishers. While they were enroute, Command requested more manpower, and Capt. Carter responded via POV with three more Troy Firefighters. Vehicles could only go so far, and firefighters from Troy, Fitzwilliam, and Rindge carted around 40 fire extinguishers as well as various other gear approximately 1/4mi into the woods to reach the vehicle. The fire took around an hour to get under control. After all the extinguishers were used, crews used shovels to throw snow on the vehicle, which eventually put it out.

Definitely a very physically demanding call, and a great job by all of the responding companies!
